Month: April 2014

loaded dice

at some point
we begin teaching
our children
not to cry,

which is strange and terrible
because
it’s the most rational response

anyone could have
to the world.

Some claim
religion
is the problem
but if we
got rid of it,
people
would just
bump one another off

over
shoes,
shower curtains,
the rising price
of a good burrito.

Take a look.

We had gunpowder
long before
vaccines came around
and by God,
I’d like to
get a peek
at the numbers.

The innovators
of cruelty
will always have
a fuel
all their own

and you can count on it lasting

even when we’re stocking up
on canned goods
and unloading gold
for water.

You could do a lot worse
than to
cry a little.

To paraphrase
a guy
I neither
love nor hate:

It’s the people, stupid.

Philly ’85

there must have been a

brutal and reverse

alchemy

in play

when the tear gas hit the house.

transforming

the noble to base

and mouthing the promise

of a gunfight.

now goddammit

I don’t like to take sides

unless I know you up close,

but what kind of man

drops a bomb

and then claims

not to want a fire?

we sure knew

little Michael

had no love for those flames

as he ran from the house

wearing a coat

of burning.

28 years later

he was dead

in a jacuzzi.

Accidental drowning

said the guys

who summoned fire

and were shocked

to see what it did.

hard stop

the heart roasts against its chamber.

the courtesy of a night grown so mercenary,

you can follow the bled dollars,

you can catch the faintest smell of a kill.

the courtesy of a night grown so mercenary,

its greased palm slips upon you but won’t let go.

you can catch the faintest smell of a kill.

but what you’ll do hangs unknown, a riddle.

you can follow the bled dollars,

but what you’ll do hangs unknown, a riddle.
