abominable

I’ve always loved
to watch
the bigfoot documentaries
on the tv and computer.

It always stuns me
how we chase them
with cameras,
guns,
or both
and yet are amazed
that they’re in no big hurry
to meet us.

Invariably, there will be a
wise and bearded man
saying “We must STUDY them!”

And I think to myself
WHY? WE DON’T BOTHER LEARNING
FROM WHAT LITTLE WE DO KNOW
ABOUT THEM.

It seems obvious
that these creatures
mind their own business
and take care of their young
—behavior that is strange and exotic to us,
and certainly nothing we would ever try
to emulate.

You’ll probably never catch them
making war,
brewing poisons,
building ugly farting cars,
or filming themselves
doing silly and counter-intuitive things.

No.

What the wise and bearded men
truly mean when they speak of studying bigfoot is
“We need to cage it, show ’em who’s boss!”

Why?

Because it buggers our
petty and maladjusted brains
that there’s another bi-pedal
life form out there, possibly even
possessing the coveted
opposable thumbs

—and capable of using them for purposes
more enlightened
than bombs or
reality tv.
